Video In Brief:
Productivity is classically defined as Output in relation to the Inputs.
Productivity is now often seen as as Output per unit of Time.
The Productivity Fallacy: Be similarly efficient in all things.
We use tools of all kinds to boost our efficiency (do more per unit of time).
Why? We are chasing the feeling of “I crushed it today!” But that is not about things… It’s about completing meaningful activities.
There is another narrative we must endure: Do more with less.
Management is about compelling action (we get compliance)
Leadership is about inspiring action (we get engagement)
The problem? It could be that our approach to productivity (get as much done as possible per unit of time) is undermining our leadership intentions.
The fallacy corrected: Be similarly efficient in all things.
Takeaways
– If you want to do more with less, it’s about contributing at a higher level as a team.
– Investing more time in our people to optimize the Output.
– Efficiency is not what you can do on any given day, but what you all can do over different time horizons.
The Coach Approach
– Be efficient with tasks. Be inefficient with people.
– They are not a task to be managed, but a person to be led.
The Work
– Capture your ratio of time spent on tasks vs. time invested in people. Is it right?
